UMM

Welcome note from the HoD

The Department of Psychology at the University of Mkar, Mkar, established in 2021, has experienced rapid growth and is committed to becoming a leading centre of academic excellence in psychology. Our mission is to advance practical and innovative research that empowers individuals and communities through the application of psychological facts, principles, and theories to understand, improve, and regulate human behaviour across cultural, institutional, and organizational contexts locally, nationally, and globally. Guided by the philosophy “No Health Without Mental Health,” the Department emphasizes mental wellbeing as the foundation for human development, with strong research and teaching interests in maternal mental health and interventions for substance use disorders.

The Department is dedicated to producing competent, well rounded psychologists equipped with both strong theoretical foundations and practical skills. Through structured internship and mentorship programmes, students gain hands on experience in hospitals, counselling centres, and rehabilitation facilities, effectively bridging theory and practice. We also embrace technology driven and hybrid learning, supported by high-tech resources generously provided by Dr Reuben Ibaishwa, to enhance flexible and modern education.
