It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the official web page of the Department of Religious and Philosophy of the University of Mkar, Mkar.  The department offers quality undergraduate degrees in Religious Studies and Philosophy in which students navigate over unprecedented situations and challenges in their personal lives and society and explore their future.

The curriculum of the Department enables the students to learn from diverse religious traditions from around the world, enriching their basic knowledge of people and their society. Through the efforts of dedicated educators and scholars in the field of Religion and Philosophy, students are equipped with necessary tools to analyze diverse aspects of current challenges of human existence and thus finding solutions to these challenges at global as well as local levels.

A Brief History of the Department of Religion and Philosophy

The University of Mkar, Mkar was licensed as a private faith-based University by the National Universities Commission on the 6th June 2005, with the Philosophy to develop a total person through university education that is qualitative comprehensive, relevant and self-reliance. As one of its objectives, to raise a generation for leaders that are godly and morally upright, patriotic, intellectually capable, resourceful, visionary, self-motivated enterprising and responsive to the challenges of the society. To achieve its Philosophy and objectives, the Department of Religion and Philosophy was established and approved by National Universities Commission in the year 2020. 

The Department is structured in such a way that its programmes meet the National Universities Commission’s Benchmark for Academic Standards. The Department took off with a pioneer academic staff of three Lecturers with Rev. Dr. Simeon Iember Aande as the first Head of Department. The other Academic staff includes Rev. Dr. D. B. Apuuivom, and Mr. Godwin Aondover Gbande. At this humble beginning the Department mounted two academic programmes: B.A. Religious Studies and B.A. Philosophy with few students.

VISION AND MISSION

The vision of the Department of Religion and Philosophy is to produce students whose existence would depend on their willingness to serve God and humanity, and to make them intellectual fortified to navigate unprecedented situations and challenges in their personal lives and society and explore their future.

The Department’s mission is to equip the students with diverse religious and philosophical traditions from around the world, enriching their basic knowledge of people and their society, and to help them acquire necessary tools to analyse and offer solution to diverse challenges of human existence. The mission of the Department is also to develop critical, independent and creative minds with unique approach to life, mediated by wisdom and values for enhanced skills and sustainable development of both the self and nation.

ACCREDITATION STATUS OF PROGRAMMES

The Department of Religion and Philosophy was established and approved by National Universities Commission in the year 2020. The Department is structured in such a way that its programmes meet the National Universities Commission’s Benchmark for Academic Standards.
